JazzSide 1 - Track 1. The Barbara SongSide 1 - Track 2. Las Vegas TangoSide 2 - Track 1. The Flute SongSide 2 - Track 2. Hotel MeSide 2 - Track 3. El Toreador
Canadian-born arranger and composer Gil Evans had already reconfigured the possibilities of orchestral jazz through his work with Miles Davis by the time The Individualism Of Gil Evans arrived on Verve in 1964. This one still feels gloriously unmoored. 'Time Of The Barracudas' opens with sepulchral brass movements and simmering rhythmic undertow that gradually constrict around the arrangement, then 'El Toreador' stretches a stubborn one-chord vamp into something monolit.
